Summary:
Production Hub paginators are responsible for the quality and production of our printed and digital publications. These journalists are experienced editors who demonstrate a high level of accuracy and sense of urgency, have a strong sense of newspaper and web design and style, and can thrive in a production environment with multiple deadlines for multiple print and digital publications. The PubHub produces all printed publications for Michigan Cluster.

What you will do:

  • Design and paginate Cluster print and digital publications using Saxotech and other software platforms that meet Cluster quality standards and communicate news priorities

  • Work with Photoshop, Illustrator and other tools to create cutouts and other attractive design styles to improve the visual quality of our newspapers

  • Collaborate with content teams to achieve the vision for print and digital packages

  • Monitor wire services and create print packages of non-local content that is relevant to local audiences

  • Monitor local, regional and state news sources to create digital content relevant to local audiences

  • Contribute to a constructive and respectful team culture filled with positive feedback, listening, training, problem-solving, project management, performance management, mentoring and coaching

  • Crop and edit photos for effective print and digital display

  • Team is constantly adapting and innovating, harnessing new technology and software for higher quality and more efficient workflow

What you will bring:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years in newspaper design and digital production preferred

  • Meet deadlines and overcome obstacles to complete work assignments

  • Harness new technology and software for higher quality and more efficient workflow

  • Broad understanding of diverse topic areas such as news, business, entertainment and sports to ensure that published content is newsworthy and interesting

  • Self-starter who is organized, efficient and capable of meeting deadlines

  • Strong news judgment and commitment to accuracy

  • Willing to work day, night, weekend and holiday shifts. These may rotate on a periodic basis

  • Strong knowledge of libel and AP Style, and extensive knowledge of spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • Strong writing skills needed to create headlines, subheads, cutlines and other informational copy needed for print publications

  • Strong editing skills to trim stories and to size and crop photos for print and digital publication

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks at one time

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to interact with staff across Michigan’s publications

  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and the Saxotech content management system preferred

  • Mastery of technology and new ways of creating printed and digital publications

  • Strong knowledge of the print and digital production process, from pagination and platemaking to printing and content to creation to posting

  • Critical thinking necessary to overcome individual or team technical problems

  • Possesses a high degree of business and personal integrity

  • Application must include samples of your work

The paper has been published under various names, including The Pontiac Press, until it was renamed The Oakland Press in 1972. Original editorials and reporting, including major-sport beat writers are also carried in the sister paper The Macomb Daily.

The hourly wage is $14.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
