Description:

The Capital Times, a digital-first newsroom in Madison, Wis., is seeking an experienced reporter who loves finding and telling high-interest, hard news stories no one else is covering. This is a reporter who knows how to develop their own niche but is flexible enough to cover a range of stories, whether digging into the operations of a multimillion-dollar college athletics program, or exposing criminal injustice, or revealing local climate change effects.

It’s not your old-school general assignment beat. This is one focused on investigative and enterprise reports, both quick-turn and deeper-dive stories. This reporter will have a penchant for breaking their own news, as well as coming out with the most interesting and revealing angles following news reported by other media outlets.

This journalist will often collaborate with other beat reporters at the Cap Times to help elevate our coverage of high-impact issues, so teamwork skills are a must.  The Investigative & Enterprise Reporter also will work with editors to identify stories and topics that are ripe for more and better coverage in the Madison area, to carve a distinctive Cap Times “lane” in that subject area.

In addition, our newsroom has a commitment to reach and cover under-heard and underserved members of our community, and is seeking someone who will find such stories challenging and valuable.

Madison is home to more than 250,000 people, the Wisconsin state Capitol, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a growing biotech industry and a vibrant restaurant and entertainment scene. Located between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona on an isthmus, the city also boasts many opportunities for outdoor recreation on the water, on its many miles of bike paths and in abundant city and Dane County parks.

For this position, three to five years of professional experience in a daily news operation is preferred. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is required. Bilingual skills and cross-cultural competence, or experience in a marginalized community, are ideal.

Benefits offered include medical, dental, and vision insurances; company-paid life and long term disability insurance; company matched 401(k); employee assistance program; and paid time off, sick, and holiday time. Pre-employment background and drug screenings apply.

The Capital Times is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We are committed to maintaining a workforce that accurately reflects our audience and expands our voice. Women, minorities and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
