Description:

Department:                The Christian Science Monitor

SUMMARY

This writer is interested in innovative reporting and committed to journalism that is highly distinctive in its values orientation, and is constructive and solution-oriented.

The Monitor wants to be a tool for readers who want more than headlines – they want to understand the values and full range of perspectives driving events, and to be a part of the solution. Our Washington coverage is a vital part of this promise, and our writers will interact frequently with our audience, through articles, social media, events, and partnerships.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Monitor is looking for a Washington-based reporter with Capitol Hill, White House, or agency experience (or a combination of the three) to deliver innovative reporting and clear, thoughtful analysis on a wide range of subjects. Applicants must have demonstrated skill in responding to breaking news stories on deadline, as well as a mastery of in-depth features and cover stories. Of particular interest is coverage that delves into the people, underlying ideas, and mechanisms that shed light on why Washington operates the way it does.

This is a position for a mid-career professional with years of D.C. reporting experience, top-notch writing skills, and a broad base of knowledge across an array of complex topics, from politics to policy. A deep rolodex of sources is a plus. Must be willing to collaborate with other writers and mentor younger staff members.

Qualifications include but are not limited to the following:

  • Excellent writing and reporting skills, including under deadline pressure. A sharp eye for detail and the highest standards for accuracy and excellence.
  • A commitment to the Monitor’s calm, non-sensational approach to covering news.
  • Adherence to Monitor values and standards.
  • Ability to produce a range of story types at a consistent pace.
  • Can quickly reach appropriate primary and analytical sources, and deal with them professionally and productively.
  • Reliably spots legal, ethical, or logical weaknesses in a story.
  • Is competent regarding expense accounting and cost control.
  • Team player, with the confidence to take the lead or guide others when necessary. Collaborates effectively with assigning editor and communicates clearly to that individual.
  • Travels as required.
  • Responds to reader feedback in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Collaborate on hosting Monitor events pertaining to coverage. Assigning editor should be consulted about all engagements.
  • Participate in D.C. bureau meetings and collaborate with other writers within and outside the National News pod to ensure that we are providing nuanced, robust coverage.
