Description:

The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World is seeking a reporter to cover high school sports, while assisting with coverage of area collegiate programs.  Lawrence and Douglas County combine to create an excellent sports community. The area is home to the University of Kansas and its nationally recognized men’s basketball program, two small colleges, multiple high schools and an active scene for running, biking and other outdoor sports.

The Journal-World is seeking a strong writer with a natural curiosity that goes beyond the scores and stats. We value journalists who have the background and diversity of experiences to not just cover the major events but also tell the broad stories of sports and the people who play them. While a degree in journalism is preferred, we are open to a variety of experience levels, including recent graduates who can demonstrate strong writing and reporting skills. The position includes a mix of night and weekend work, involves some travel and requires the ability to write on tight deadlines for both our print and online products. Experience with sports photography and/or videography is a plus.

The Journal-World operates a six-day-per-week daily newspaper and two news websites, LJWorld.com and KUsports.com. The reporter will be assigned particular teams and sports to cover, but also must be flexible to work collaboratively with a team of approximately 10 journalists who cover our community of approximately 100,000 people.

Located just outside the Kansas City metro area, Lawrence is a vibrant, growing community with an attractive downtown, many entertainment options and a population that values and supports local journalism.

Applicants should send a cover letter, resumé and three writing samples to Sports Editor Henry Greenstein at hgreenstein@ljworld.com.
