Summary:

The Capital Gazette seeks a creative and energetic editor to lead an organization that has roots going back to 1727.  

This editor will work with a team of journalists, cultivating enterprise and breaking news coverage, identifying, assigning and editing Annapolis and Anne Arundel County news content, managing capitalgazette.com's digital channels and executing community engagement strategies.  

This position coordinates emerging and enterprise coverage for capitalgazette.com and daily editions of The Capital, the twice-weekly Maryland Gazette. This editor also coordinates coverage with its parent news organization, The Baltimore Sun.

What you will do:

  • Monitors breaking news and assigns, edits and produces daily and enterprise stories in varied formats 

  • Programs content on the Capital Gazette website

  • Curates audience engagement tools, such as programming newsletters, email, web and desktop alerts as well as posting to social media platforms

  • Guides reporters on story development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling

  • Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategies

  • Works shifts that may include nights and/or weekends, as news dictates

 

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • At least two years of experience as an editor/producer

  • Excellent knowledge of SEO and digital strategies

  • Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management
