Description:

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s leading news organization, is looking for a high-energy, detail-oriented, organized and motivated politics and government editor to guide coverage of the 2024 election and beyond. Nevada is one of the country’s few true swing states, which leads to intense presidential campaigning and highly competitive federal and statewide races. The spotlight of the national political media is a regular presence in Las Vegas, which is home to a diverse electorate.

We're seeking an experienced storyteller who’s able to spot trends, be a watchdog, and cultivate enterprise as well as recognize breaking news of importance to Southern Nevadans. We need a strong communicator who can mentor and motivate reporters, fine-tune copy and function as part of a team. The job requires strong news judgment, in-depth knowledge of politics and the workings of local government, a sense of urgency, and the ability to work with others. We’re also looking for a bulldog with a track record of requesting and fighting for public records.

The ideal candidate is digitally focused and comfortable navigating metrics and data, can work well under deadline pressure and elevate stories, and has the skills to make complicated issues understandable. We want an editor who understands the importance of producing work that is helpful to voters, embraces alternative story forms when possible, and can re-engage disgruntled voters with the news.

Las Vegas is as dynamic a news market as anywhere in the country, and the Review-Journal is the area’s dominant news source. Southern Nevada is home to about 2.3 million people, plus up to 200,000 visitors on any given day. It is a diverse metro area with a vibrant downtown and cultural scene, and it’s a half-day drive or less to some of the West’s most spectacular outdoor recreation and national parks.

Among many honors, the Review-Journal has captured 46 Best of the West awards over the past six years, and it won two Sigma Delta Chi Awards for deadline reporting in three years. We’re an innovative, collaborative newsroom that was named one of “10 Publishers That Do It Right” by Editor & Publisher in both 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the Review-Journal was the local media honoree at The Poynter Institute’s 2023 Bowtie Ball in Tampa.

The Review-Journal is an equal-opportunity employer and a drug-free workplace. A pre-employment drug screening and background check is mandatory. We offer a generous benefits package, including 401(k) with company match. This position is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Please send a resume, cover letter, references and samples of your best work to Carri Geer, assistant managing editor, at cgeer@reviewjournal.com. Please include “Politics editor opening” in the subject line.
