Description:

El Paso Matters, a growing and respected nonprofit newsroom on the U.S.-Mexico border, is seeking an assistant editor to improve our impact, grow our audience, and help further develop our strong news team. Prior editing experience is a plus, but this also is a good position for a reporter looking to step into a bigger leadership role.

The assistant editor will work with editor Cindy Ramirez and CEO Robert Moore to plan news coverage, with a focus on in-depth and investigative reporting. You’ll work directly with reporters in shaping story ideas and bringing them to publication. We’re still a small staff, so you’ll also have opportunities to develop stories you’ll report and write.

About El Paso Matters

El Paso Matters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that provides in-depth and investigative journalism for a binational region of more than 2 million people. Our reporting often has national and international implications, but we also provide important local accountability journalism. We are part of the Puente News Collaborative, a unique U.S.-Mexican news partnership dedicated to reporting on issues in a way that recognizes the unique nature of binational communities. In four years of operation, we have become a premiere news provider in the region and have won national awards from the Online News Association, Society of Professional Journalists and Institute for Nonprofit News.

El Paso Matters is committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. We are an equal-opportunity employer and encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities.

The job

Work with El Paso Matters journalists to help tell the complex story of life in El Paso and on the U.S.-Mexico border. Coach journalists in the development of story ideas, and explore new ways of storytelling. Help journalists plan and pursue stories, working with them to enhance story organization and coherence to maximize the impact of our journalism. The assistant editor also will be expected to occasionally produce stories. We’ll be flexible to match reporting opportunities with the assistant editor’s skills and passions.

Benefits include a significant employer contribution to health insurance premiums, life insurance, 401K match, paid parental leave, 20 days of paid time off each year, and nine paid holidays.

Qualifications

Preferred candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience. Prior editing experience is helpful, but not mandatory. Experience in headline writing, SEO and social media copywriting preferred. Knowledge of border issues and Spanish fluency are big pluses. The position will be based in the El Paso-Juárez region.

How to apply

Please send a resume, cover letter and samples of your work to editor Cindy Ramirez, cramirez@elpasomatters.org. Please include “assistant editor” in the subject line.
