SoutheastPolitics.com is looking for an aggressive, web-savvy reporter based in North Carolina to cover the North Carolina General Assembly Session, which begins April 10.

The focus will be on proposed state legislation and its journey through the legislative process, with an emphasis on top-line issues and those affecting local governments and hot-button issues.

We are seeking the right person to join our growing team of professionals to report on NC’s always-changing political landscape.

Our ideal candidate should have a record of successful relationship-building and be adept at setting a news agenda through sources and reporting breaking news before other outlets.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of three years of experience and the ability to see the assignment as a regular beat. They must also be able to write and edit quality, accurate content on deadlines with rapidly changing priorities and be familiar with AP Style.

This individual must have superior organizational skills, a working knowledge of state government, and an aptitude for telling compelling stories.

Added requirements include understanding best practices of real-time online reporting; the ability to create multimedia packages – including video and photos – using digital tools; the use of social media, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook; assertive and creative political coverage; and the use of statistical data in editorial decisions.

Preferred experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with an educational background in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years' experience reporting and digital writing in a demanding environment.
  • Familiarity with photo editing and equipment, from smartphones to professional-grade cameras, is a plus.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation.
