Food and Agriculture Reporter for Agri-Pulse

Sacramento, California

Agri-Pulse is seeking a dynamic person who is interested in working in a fast-paced environment and joining the most talented team of journalists covering agriculture, food and rural issues. The position will be based in Sacramento, California and work in cooperation with Associate Editor Brad Hooker and the editorial team in Washington, D.C. The combined team has over 100 years of experience covering food and farm policy issues, including the farm bill, specialty crops, immigration, rural development, water, climate change, global trade, and more.

The ideal candidate should have a degree in journalism or a related field, or have equivalent experience, and possess strong writing and verbal communication skills. We are looking for an individual who is curious, confident and versatile. Agricultural and policy background, as well as at least three years of experience, is preferred but not required.

On a day-to-day basis, the reporter will cover the California legislature and state agencies impacting production of fruits, vegetables, nuts and other sectors of the state’s agriculture, including dairy. In addition, the individual will network with key farm organizations and other interest groups to gain insight on issues like water rights, crop protection products, labor and food safety.

The ability to cultivate sources and anticipate future coverage will be crucial, as well as the ability to distill complex material into clear, concise articles.

Responsibilities will include writing both breaking news and in-depth analytical stories for our electronic newsletter and the web: www.Agri-Pulse.com. In addition, the candidate should be able to take digital photos and post updates on the web and social media sites.

The successful candidate must be a self-starter and able to work independently, while communicating with the editorial team in person, by phone and e-mail.

Candidate should have:

  • A college degree in English, Journalism, or related degree
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge about farm and environmental policy issues
