The Internship Program

The Hearst Magazines Summer Internship Program is a paid, full time 11-week program for undergraduate rising Juniors & Seniors. From June 3 – August 16, 2024, our interns will gain an immersive, hands-on experience with one of the top publishers in the world.

In addition to working with their assigned team on important projects, interns will gain access to Hearst’s diverse professional network by participating in intimate learning sessions and join fun peer networking activities throughout the summer. Program participants will also leverage Hearst’s resources to work on and present a group project to senior leaders at the conclusion of the program.

Your Impact

Hearst Books publishes a diverse line of adult and childrens nonfiction lifestyle trade books and special magazine issues (bookazines) under the Hearst Magazines brands as well as partner brands. The team is seeking an intern to support the books and bookazines team in producing original publications and reprints and also in researching and developing mailings lists for our marketing programs. The intern will work with the publishing team in New York City and must be available to work in-office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. 

What you'll do

  • Learn about the process of developing a book or bookazine from ideation to manuscript development through design and production.
  • Assist editors and others on the team with daily content production and ideation such as researching trends and competitive titles, fact checking, writing copy, identifying and pulling content from magazine content database for use in manuscripts 
  • Assist in developing our marketing mailing lists by researching experts such as homeschooling teachers or librarians to build awareness for our children’s books 
  • Research reporters and social media to identify writers who might be interested in covering our publications, especially our books. Help write pitch letters targeting those reporters.

  • You are well-organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • You can work both independently and collaboratively
  • You show an enthusiasm for publishing or marketing
  • You have some experience or have taken classes writing, editing, or marketing 

The estimated base salary for this role is $20/hour. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. 

This role requires the position to be located in New York, NY with an in-office presence of 3 days a week.
