Director of Content 
Victoria, Texas

The Victoria Advocate, a newspaper with a rich history of providing our community with award-winning news, seeks an experienced Director of Content to lead our newsroom in growing and improving our coverage in South Texas. As the Director of Content, you will play a crucial role in shaping the digital and print presence of our newspaper. 

This is an onsite position in which you will lead the newsroom in curating, editing, and publishing high-quality content across our digital platforms and print products to engage and inform our online audience. You must be able to respond quickly and accurately to news as it develops. The position requires a strong understanding of journalism excellence in a daily newspaper setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Curate and select news stories, features, and multimedia content for publication on the newspaper's digital platforms and print products.
  • Implement SEO best practices to maximize the visibility and reach of digital content.
  • Conduct keyword research and optimize headlines, meta descriptions, and content for search engines.
  • Manage social media accounts to promote digital content and engage with the online audience.
  • Develop and execute strategies to increase social media following and user engagement.
  • Work with multimedia teams to integrate photos, videos, and interactive elements into digital and print content.
  • Ensure a seamless and engaging user experience across various digital platforms.
  • Utilize analytics tools to track the performance of digital content and make data-driven decisions.
  • Identify trends and opportunities for improvement in content strategy.
  • Collaborate with reporters, photographers, and other teams to coordinate coverage and maintain a cohesive digital presence.
  • Monitor various news sources to stay abreast of current events and trending topics.
  • Work with Reporters and Assignment Editor to ensure content is published expeditiously.
  • Edit and proofread articles, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to the newspaper's editorial guidelines.
  • Collaborate with writers to enhance the overall quality of content.
  • Write and publish breaking news, daily news, sports, weather, and feature stories for the print products, website, mobile and social media pages. Write compelling headlines.  

NOTE: This is NOT a video producter/editor position; video conten producer position; or a digital marketing position. It is a newspaper editor position. Only applicants with strong newspaper journalism experience will be considered.

KEY SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in digital content editing in a news environment.
  • Strong editing and writing skills with an excellent command of grammar and AP style.
  • Excellent news and editorial judgement. Professional experience with non-linear editing software (Adobe Premiere or equivalent) with a basic knowledge of Photoshop and video editing.
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices and social media management.
  • Proficiency in content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools.
  • Knowledge of multimedia content production and integration.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills. • Work well in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Possess a valid drivers’ license and good driving record.
