Your Impact:

Hearst Autos is seeking an Associate Testing Editor to join our rapidly expanding Gear Team. This ecommerce-focused group is dedicated to bringing readers the very best in automotive tools, parts, and accessories, based on our own testing, as well as the expertise of the editors of Car and Driver, Road & Track, and Autoweek. You’ll primarily work with testing team in Ann Arbor, MI, and the commerce team in NYC helping to create high-quality ecommerce content that connects with our enthusiastic audience in a highly engaging manner, while remaining objective and data driven.

A love of cars, writing, and hands-on testing is essential, and a passion for DIY and “spending time under the hood” is a plus. This role reports directly to the Head of Special Projects, sits in Ann Arbor, and works closely with a variety of departments including the Car and Driver testing team, SEO, sales, and marketing.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct objective, data-driven tests of automotive tools, parts, and accessories.
  • Coordinate updates of existing tests, from scheduling through publishing.
  • Write and produce ecommerce content based on testing data.
  • Liaise with Car and Driver car testing team on testing methods and best practices.
  • Pitch, write, and produce auto-related ecommerce content that responds to a season, a trend, a project, and other brand goals.
  • Support search and commerce goals with a flexible mindset and the ability to change course quickly.
  • Monitor news cycle to identify content opportunities, whether with new or existing content.
  • Liaise with SEO team to ensure all content is optimized for search and commerce.
  • Use Google Analytics and our data management platform to optimize for affiliate revenue.
  • Create social media content.

Who You Are:

  • A minimum of three years of automotive-focused digital writing experience, preferably with a media company or publisher and within the ecommerce space.
  • Some background in DIY, automotive maintenance, or product testing.
  • An enthusiasm for “hands on” testing and experimentation.
  • A sharp writer with the ability to translate testing data into compelling copy and to optimize for search and ecommerce best practices.
  • Experience working in a CMS.
  • A familiarity with social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
  • A familiarity with data tools like Google Analytics, Looker, Skimlinks, or similar reporting tools.
  • An ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and comfort pivoting based on business needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Top-notch organizational skills.
  • The ability to collaborate and foster positive relationships with colleagues from different departments.
  • Strong project management skills, the ability to define processes, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A passion for learning and acquiring new skills.

The base salary for this role is $60,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.
