Description:

The San Antonio Express-News is seeking a versatile journalist with knowledge of healthcare including public health, business and regulation to cover the industry as a member of its Business reporting team. It’s a big job: Healthcare and biosciences employ one of every six residents and generated an annual economic impact of $42.4 billion in 2020, making it the largest industry sector in San Antonio!

The Healthcare Reporter will serve a digital-first audience to help readers gain a deeper understanding of the industry, its ties to local, state and federal government and the military, and its broad impacts across South Texas. The beat combines traditional business and government reporting with consumer journalism and requires the ability to competitively turn a breaking news story and write enterprise off that news when warranted.

Reporting to the Business Editor, the reporter will have responsibility for coverage of:

  • Public and private healthcare-focused organizations and associated educational institutions
  • Military healthcare
  • Regional nonprofit and for-profit health systems
  • New developments and trends in treatment, health research and education
  • Healthcare sector employment, growth, economic impact and regulation
  • Biotech (in collaboration with Technology Reporter)

Within those broad topics, the beat includes coverage of these institutions:

  • South Texas Medical Center
  • San Antonio Metropolitan Health District
  • University of Texas Health Science Center
  • Advanced Research Projects for Health Texas hub
  • Brooke Army Medical Center
  • University Health System

Requirements

The beat requires the ability to develop sources, monitor social media and other outlets and use public records to drive stories that are exclusive, have impact, and that our audience will want to share and talk about on social media. The Health Reporter must be eager to pursue breaking news in a digital-first format and always thinking about how to build an enterprise from the daily news and broader trends.

The successful candidate will be an excellent reporter and writer with a track record of finding and telling compelling and rigorously reported stories, or one with bioscience, health care and health industry knowledge who is willing to develop those skills. Must be able to juggle a broad beat portfolio that requires knowledge of public and private industry, government, regulatory issues and economics.

Must work collaboratively with a diverse team of journalists who operate in photo, video, social media, data visualization, interactive and graphic formats. Because the beat’s coverage areas often overlap with others (military, government, education. real estate, labor), the successful candidate must be collaborative and cooperative.
