The Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University is seeking applications for a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Professor of Practice of Journalism beginning August 1, 2024.

The candidate will be expected to develop industry partnerships while working closely with current Belmont stakeholders. They will be expected to design curriculum that will best prepare students for the continuously evolving field of journalism, multimedia production and storytelling. Additional responsibilities will include academic advising, student mentoring and college and university service. A bachelor’s degree with significant industry experience is a minimum to apply. A master’s degree in a related area, significant industry and teaching experience is strongly preferred. The candidate may teach undergraduate topics within the department as they relate to news including video editing, scriptwriting, multi-media production, investigative reporting, data journalism, experiential media.

Catalog courses taught could include, but are not limited to, Investigative Reporting, Journalism Beat Reporting, Entrepreneurial Media, Emerging Tech Trends, Multi-media Production, Video Presentation, First Year Seminar or other courses yet to be designed. As all Belmont undergraduates complete an innovative general education program with significant interdisciplinary components, Belmont University is particularly seeking applicants who can demonstrate the interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses in this program.

  • Expert on current industry standards in the practice of reporting and writing and news production using the Associated Press/news style and demonstrated professional success as a news/media professional.
  • Demonstrated record of creating ethical and responsibly-sourced journalism.
  • Ability to develop, support and collaborate with faculty, college and university and industry professionals.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and current developments in the field of study.
  • Knowledge of subject matter and course content taught.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage in high quality scholarly activity.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate and evaluate students.
  • Skilled in the use of computers, Internet resources, and MS Office software.
  • Ability to learn relevant sections of BannerWeb, Belmont University’s online integrated database system for student grading.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.
  • Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the programs and services offered by Belmont University. Interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.

Required Education: A bachelor’s degree with significant industry experience is a minimum to apply. A master’s degree in a related area, significant industry and teaching experience is strongly preferred.

Required Experience: Minimum three year's experience as a working journalist either print, digital or broadcast. Work as a multi-media journalist preferred. College-level teaching experience preferred.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check satisfactory to the University.
