Description:
Summary:
The Chicago Tribune is looking for an agile Reporter to join its politics team at the largest news organization in the Midwest. This Reporter will be responsible for producing clear and contextualized stories about politics in metro Chicago and the state and occasionally national political stories focused through a Midwestern lens. The Tribune is seeking a writer mostly focused on digging for enterprise stories that will break news and tell compelling tales that resonate with readers.
What you will do:
-
Produce pieces on a regular basis; not afraid to conceptualize, conceive and execute big-picture stories that could take weeks or even months to complete and do so while balancing daily tasks
-
In 2024, this reporter will be the main beat reporter responsible for both breaking and enterprise pieces tied to the Democratic National Convention that will be held in Chicago in August
-
While this will involve some daily stories and short-term enterprise pieces, we're less interested in turn-of-the-screw convention coverage
-
Be the main reporting conduit with DNC officials to help with planning our convention coverage
-
Focus on competitive elections, especially those for Congress
-
Regular shifts will vary depending on news needs but candidates should expect some night and weekend work
What you will bring:
-
Be able to cut through talking points, dispel mistruths to tell readers what public officials and those seeking office are up to
-
Work well on their own but, when the needs arise, can work collaboratively with reporters on both the City Hall and state government teams while also keeping an eye on Illinois' congressional delegation
-
A skill set in which you are able to quickly file and organize FOIAs is a plus, and while you don't have to be a data wiz, some data skills would help
Please include the following in your online application:
-
Submit a cover letter, resume and links to five clips that show your skills and range
