The Messenger is a new digital news media company, whose mission is to deliver accurate, balanced, non-partisan news and information across every vertical, from politics and business to sports and entertainment.

Job Summary:

The Messenger is looking for an editor to run the Breaking News team for its Science & Technology section. The ideal candidate has a strong background in science or tech reporting, and must have experience identifying, assigning and editing live news as it breaks; they are focused on speed and accuracy, and not afraid to turn around a large quantity of copy every day. They know where to look to find what’s new and trending before anyone else has the story. This editor will lead a team of early career reporters, and will help them learn the tools of the trade. It’s an ideal position for an experienced journalist who wants to be a mentor and a teacher in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

  • Finding vital breaking news and trending stories, and working with reporters to develop stories

  • Assigning and editing engaging, accurate and swiftly delivered news in a high-volume, fast-paced environment

  • Monitoring competing news sites, wires, and social media for the stories that matter to our readers

  • Cutting through the spin in company press releases

  • Ensuring that all content is optimized for SEO and social media

  • Coordinating across teams to determine which stories need to be handed off to beat reporters so they can be built out fully

  • Managing a team of rookie reporters, helping them develop future beats, and teaching them to become world-class journalists

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience covering or editing news at a real-time news outlet

  • Proven track record of filing or editing news in a fast-paced environment

  • Experience as a beat reporter covering science and/or technology stories

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule if there’s a big breaking story out of normal work hours

  • Strong news judgment and the ability to identify relevant stories and trends

  • Familiarity with SEO and social media best practices.

  • A high level of motivation, organization and outstanding communication skills

We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome all qualified candidates to apply for this position regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other legally protected status.
