Description:
Headline news start-up seeks writer / editor / co-founder
There are two crucial requirements: 1) a fair, fast, smart and insightful writer/editor with a broad and deep knowledge of current events and recent history, and 2) a strong interest in a start-up, and willing and able to be compensated only with start-up equity for possibly a year.
The ideal candidate might be a retired journalist, but any person of any background or situation is welcome who meets both criteria. Recent graduate, retired lawyer or teacher, someone re-entering the workplace, etc.
The goal is to build a simple and innovative way to keep up with the news. We are working towards a soft launch in August. This is not an opinion blog. It will strive to be for readers from across the spectrum of fact-based political and cultural opinions.
It's a risk. This entrepreneurial venture is the opposite of the big-money, large-staff news and media start-ups that have recently cut way back, shut down or declared bankruptcy. This is a very lean startup with minimal capital.
One benefit of this frugal strategy is that the person who can join and help it succeed can become a significant owner of the project. Some small media start-ups have sold for $20+ million in recent years. Hopefully, the value that may be created over time will compensate for taking zero salary in the beginning.
The lean strategy also empowers the project to build a site that can take the high road to reach its target set of readers with fewer editorial or advertising compromises.
The perfect candidate will be ready for long work days and work weeks. It's a garage start-up in every way. However, shorter and more scheduled work hours could also be OK, especially if two candidates can be found. The position is remote work, though might shift to in-person if the hired candidate(s) live in the DC region.
The right person is conversant with a complete spectrum of news categories: US politics and government, business, tech, environment, international, science, defense, crime and justice, education, opinion, health, media, culture, etc.
Resumes welcome, but no need to be formal at this point. Just send a quick note with whatever you think we should know.
All correspondence will be kept confidential. We will only make positive responses. A non-disclosure agreement will eventually be required.
