VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA

ASSOCIATE EDITOR OF THE VVA VETERAN

Reporting and Relationships

Reports to and is under the direct supervision of the Editor. The Associate Editor works closely with other departments, assisting them to get their message into the VVA Veteran.  This is an exempt position.  The job may require some travel outside the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Experience

This position requires, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited degree-granting educational institution and five years related experience. It is necessary for the incumbent to have a highly collaborative style, experience in developing feature articles, excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills, experience as a photographer and the ability to manage a variety of key initiatives concurrently.  It is expected that the incumbent will be proficient in writing, editing, and proofreading articles. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite - especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator – is required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread stories and copy
  • Works with chapters to get their stories into print. Sometimes, the story can be written by a chapter member; other times, editor must write or assign story; The Associate Editor enables chapters to get their messages out and to broadcast news about the important things they are doing — both to take a bow and to energize and inspire other chapters
  • Assist inputting corrections and keying in letters and articles for publication in the magazine
  • Read galleys in preparation for publication
  • Proofread all copy
  • Check headlines
  • Write captions
  • Maintains electronic and paper photo files, arranged by date and event. These files will be used in creation of the magazine and can be used for creation of the annual report and other historical reports
  • Conduct photography research
  • Pursue story ideas as assigned by the Editor; conduct interviews and research following the procedures of investigative journalism; write the story
  • Proofread and edit The VVA Veteran online for errors
  • Assemble a database of chapter activities for use in the magazine, the website, and elsewhere as needed

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in correspondence and general communication with membership and general contributors, addressing complaints and story suggestions
  • Provide administrative and clerical support, to include mailing, postage, photocopying, and data entry
  • When required, be a staff liaison to a committee and/or task force
  • When necessary, create and implement new initiatives
  • Be a self-starter, able to work independently
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
  • Identify issues, concerns, or challenges and bring them to the attention of the Editor
