Description:

Education Reporting Intern
Summer 2023

Job Description

The Hechinger Report is looking for a reporting intern to work with us over the summer. The intern will research, conduct interviews and write about national K-12 education issues for our site. The work will be published there and may also be published by one of our media partners. Over the 12-week internship, the intern will produce at least one in-depth story with the support of our experienced editors and reporters.

Our coverage is known for its focus on how education policy affects students and educators in classrooms and on campuses, and the internship usually requires travel to report the in-depth story. The intern will also be expected to contribute shorter news items, newsletters and other reporting on a range of education issues.

The pay is $650/week. The intern may work remotely, but an intern based in NYC will benefit from in-person contact with our staff there.  Please be prepared to talk about story idea that you’d like to pursue in depth, which you could start working on as soon as you arrive.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • Skill at writing for both print and online audiences
  • Experience doing research, conducting interviews and doing on-the-ground reporting
  • Comfort with writing analysis pieces based on original reporting
  • Ability to understand and explain data to a general audience
  • Basic knowledge of national education issues
  • Photography/multimedia experience
  • Prior internship at a news outlet

The application requires a resume, cover letter, two published clips and a story idea that you’d like to pursue during the internship. Apply here.
