Description:

Help Wanted: Committed Student Journalist for Paid Editorial Internship.

This internship is designed as an educational opportunity for students with a passion for local journalism.

California Local, a Santa Cruz-based startup with an office in Sacramento, is building an online network to deliver news and information that people need to better participate in the life of their communities—from city council meeting reports to news from local nonprofits and community groups.

This position is available to students registered in accredited California institutions as well as recent graduates. It requires a commitment of 10 to 20 hours per week for 12-16 weeks.

Each internship is tailored for the individual student. At the beginning of the internship, we will work together to create a list of specific, measurable goals as well as broader skills that the Intern would like to work on.

Bonus points if you are knowledgeable about politics and culture in Santa Clara County, Sacramento, the Central Coast and/or Lake Tahoe.

There are three elements to our program.

1. Work with our editor and managing editor to come up with a research and reporting project that aligns with your educational goals. This will result in a published work or series on CaliforniaLocal.com.

2. Survey our coverage area on a daily basis and help us compile an accurate, readable news digest. It's not fancy work, but it's necessary work that only a journalist could love.

3. Work on short-term freelance writing projects tailored to your skills and educational goals.

Compensation: $20-$25 per hour based on experience, plus flat rates for freelance articles based on length and complexity.
