Indigenous affairs reporter
|Date Posted||January 24, 2023|
|Industry||Newspapers / Wires, Digital Media|
|Required Education||Bachelor's Degree|
Lee Enterprises and ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, are partnering to produce enterprising coverage of Indigenous peoples and issues in two key locations – Tulsa and Rapid City – and if you’re an experienced reporter who would like to be a key part of that effort, read on. This job position is specifically for the Tulsa position.
Both of these outstanding reporting opportunities offer excellent salary and benefits. The reporters will join the staffs of the Tulsa World and Rapid City Journal, respectively, and will work in tandem with editors from both ICT and the respective news organizations. Both ICT and Lee recognize the need for deep, comprehensive coverage, and the reporters will have a voice in story selection and planning. Indeed, self-starters who regularly pitch ideas and will brainstorm new ways to cover Indigenous communities are desired.
Successful applicants will have demonstrated writing and reporting ability at the professional level; at least three to five years’ daily experience or the equivalent is preferred. The reporters will handle a mix of daily stories, weekend features and longer-term projects. The ability to photograph and to produce video, both to accompany stories and to produce occasional broadcast packages for ICT’s daily newscast, is essential. Experience with podcasting and other platforms is a plus. We will expect these reporters to have a strong professional presence on social media.
Key skills include:
- Interviewing and source development
- Advanced research skills including FOIA aptitude and document analysis
- Ability to write crisply and compellingly
- Experience in video production and video editing
- Using background in American Indian and Alaska Native issues, histories, and cultures, and federal Indian policy, to provide context in news stories
Both the World and the Journal are outstanding workplaces with editors who greatly value storytelling, as do the editors at ICT. Both cities and surrounding regions have significant Indigenous communities that merit great coverage and need to see themselves portrayed thoughtfully and thoroughly. We expect these reporters to be immersed in those communities, and therefore one reporter will need to be located in Tulsa, and the other in Rapid City.
The jobs offered by this partnership will provide important, high-visibility opportunities to produce memorable journalism. While local news is paramount, these reporters’ work will be seen nationwide with the digital presence and reach of Lee Enterprises’ 77 news organizations and Indiancountrytoday.com. Hiring will be done collaboratively with the two organizations.
ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, is owned by IndiJ Public Media, an independent nonprofit, multimedia news organization with headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, and bureaus in Alaska and Washington, D.C. ICT covers the Indigenous world, including American Indians and Alaska Natives through a digital news site and a weekday newscast with international viewership. IndiJ Public Media is a 501 (c)(3) public charity that sustains itself with funding from members, donors, foundations, and supporters worldwide.
