Description:
Us
The BVI Beacon is a small national newspaper in the British Virgin Islands that routinely punches above its weight. Our work in print and online ranges from award-winning cross-border investigations to in-depth narrative journalism to hyper-local breaking news and features.
The position
We are seeking a versatile journalist to lead our weekly business section and to produce in-depth enterprise coverage on a wide range of topics, including the territory’s international financial services industry; the tourism sector’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic; the environment and climate change; the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Irma in 2017; and the governance reforms being implemented following the arrest last year of the territory's then-premier in Miami.
There is plenty of sailing and surfing here, of course, but this is not a job for sailors or surfers looking to write on the side. Rather, it’s one for a serious, conscientious journalist who is as comfortable researching a months-long investigation as they are writing a colorful feature about this small but diverse community of about 33,000 people.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include planning coverage; reporting and writing business articles and in-depth special reports; taking photographs and videos; creating multimedia features; and occasional editing.
Experience and skills
The ideal candidate will have professional journalism experience that includes business coverage, in-depth enterprise projects and multimedia work. However, our most important requirements are curiosity and a willingness to learn. We routinely hire promising recent graduates with relevant background even if they require training in some areas.
To apply
Rush a cover letter, a resumé and five clips that showcase your most in-depth reporting to bvibeaconjobs@gmail.com. The application process is competitive, and applicants who make it through the first round may be asked to complete a writing test. We apologise that we are unable to respond to all unsuccessful candidates.
