Description:

It's the best of both worlds: a modern, web-based news outlet backed by a family-owned newspaper company with more than a century of experience. Our site seeks to be cutting edge but also grounded in the principles of good journalism.

Seaton Publications owns nearly a dozen news entities in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Oklahoma. We're looking for someone who wants to be the primary editor for our newest publication, the Olathe Reporter, in the suburbs of Kansas City. The Reporter focuses on local government coverage in the fourth-largest city in Kansas (and the fourth-largest in the Kansas City metro area).

Olathe is a young, growing city of about 140,000, expected to more than double in population in the next 20 years — and The Reporter is the only news outlet that provides regular coverage. That makes this job a great opportunity for a self-starter with strong news sense. The successful candidate would cover local meetings, conduct interviews, and write stories that give readers context and understanding of how their tax dollars are being spent.

The Olathe Reporter offers a salary and benefits package that includes medical, vision and dental insurance, paid vacation and retirement plan. Bachelor's degree and reporting experience a plus, but most of all, we want someone who is curious and willing to work as part of a team.

To apply, please send a cover letter, résumé and three to five writing clips to Ned Seaton at nseaton@themercury.com.
