The National Press Club Journalism Institute is hiring a Director of Training to create and manage its professional development portfolio. The training director reports to and works closely with the executive director to create an engaging, meaningful slate of programs and published resources that supports journalists throughout the United States and across the globe. The Institute’s current training portfolio includes virtual and in-person programming in Washington, D.C., as well as publishing in the Institute’s newsletters and website.

The Director of Training will:

  • Develop and implement a professional development strategy that meets evolving stakeholder needs and the Institute’s mission;

  • Design and deliver engaging curriculum, or oversee curriculum development for, at least a dozen programs and workshops annually on a variety of topics benefitting journalists, professional communicators, and the public;

  • Generate training ideas and engaging delivery methods that extend the Institute’s reach and build loyalty;

  • Advance diversity, equity and inclusion through choice of programming, promotions, and speakers;

  • Identify promising potential instructors, recruit and coach them, provide feedback;

  • Oversee execution of programming, including logistics, coordination, and communication;

  • Write program announcements, reports, and other materials;

  • Create and track measurement tools that effectively evaluate learning outcomes;

  • Maintain annual training calendar, publishing cycles, and course descriptions;

  • Assess future learning needs in consultation with members, staff, board, journalists, journalism students, and members of the public;

  • Within the first six months, take over as editorial leader for The Latest, the Institute’s daily afternoon newsletter (See archives here.);

  • Write and edit takeaways and resources for Institute newsletters, social media, and website. Excellent knowledge of AP and journalistic style and attention to detail are musts;

  • Collect and contribute program narratives for grant applications and development initiatives;

  • Ensure programs are on budget and meet requirements for grantmakers;

  • Identify and explore collaborative learning opportunities with external partners.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Newsroom experience within the last five years. Leadership or management experience is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience editing, teaching, or coaching journalists. Experience developing journalism curriculum or training resources is a plus.

  • The ability to network and work with diverse stakeholders, including other senior-level journalists and editors, policymakers, subject-matter experts, and students.

  • An entrepreneurial spirit and eye for the future of journalism, and the ability to assess programmatic needs. 

  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Strong analytical and communication skills in writing and in person.

  • Solid knowledge and regular use of digital learning tools, publishing platforms, and hybrid work environments. 

  • Excellent organization and time management skills.

The National Press Club Journalism Institute is housed within the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The Institute team is transitioning to a hybrid work schedule in 2023 with a few in-office work days per week. Fully remote work is not available for this position.  

Salary and benefits

The minimum salary for this position is $105,000.
