McClatchy is seeking a visionary opinion editor – driven by a clarity of purpose and commitment to community – to lead the Editorial Board of The Kansas City Star. The person in this role will be tasked with rebuilding and energizing one of the strongest local Editorial Boards in America, a Pulitzer Prize-winning team that creates deeply reported opinion journalism and convenes conversation that inspires change.

An opportunity in a McClatchy newsroom is without peer in digital media, as our team assertively and rapidly extends the only local media playbook in America that is delivering growth. Local Opinion is a central component of this growth agenda, as our opinion writers move at the speed of news to apply thought-provoking ideas to the most pressing issues of relevance to readers, viewers and listeners across the ideological spectrum.

The challenge and opportunity in this role is to experiment with purpose to identify more and better ways to connect our audience with ideas. Our Editorial Board must be a place for candid, civil conversation and constructive debate, reflecting the diversity of Kansas City. The person in this role will be charged with strengthening The Star’s connection to community, leading relevant discussions on local and statewide issues and creating space for a wide range of political and policy views.

Success in this role will be measured by the distinctive, timely local opinion journalism produced by the team as well as growth in local audience served by that differentiated content. This requires a fluency in audience analytics, an understanding of the characteristics of this unique market, and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results. At McClatchy, successful leadership requires an insatiable desire to experiment, iterate and adjust as the news environment dictates.

The Opinion Editor will direct the Editorial Board’s efforts to effect change, break news, write persuasively, elevate varied perspectives and work across multiple platforms. The editor will assign, edit and craft reported editorials representing The Star Editorial Board’s views, as well as reported columns. She or he will solicit commentary from influential thinkers throughout our region and expand our offerings through podcasts, newsletters and video.

If this is you, please consider these requirements and apply:

  • Understanding of Kansas City’s character, its people, its history and its unique position among American cities;
  • Fluency in effective team leadership, inclusive culture and growth mindset;
  • Experience leveraging news analytics to grow local audience engagement;
  • A track record of experimentation with purpose that delivers intended outcomes;
  • At least five years of experience delivering intended outcomes in a digital newsroom.
