Notice of Job Opening
Position: Multimedia Journalist and The Aiken Standard, an award-winning daily community newspaper serving Aiken, S.C. area, is seeking a Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) to add to its news gathering team. Your responsibilities as a MMJ will include reporting, shooting and editing news stories, writing, developing contacts, as well as other responsibilities as assigned. You will be expected to produce daily content on a variety of platforms including the internet, social networking sites and mobile phones.

This is a full-time position including benefits; salary is negotiable and will be commensurate to experience. Experienced journalists and recent college graduates encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong news judgment and writing skills
  • Sharp video shooting and editing skills
  • Solid storytelling ability
  • Smooth/pleasant delivery
  • Previous experience in a newsroom environment 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • General assignment and beat reporting
  • Generating story ideas and localizing national headlines
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Taking photographs and video to accompany stories
  • Utilizing social media daily to post articles and for community engagement
  • Monitor and cover breaking news as needed


Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in journalism or communications
  • Strong skills with technology, video production, editing and AP style
  • Ability to prioritize workload and self-manage projects, handle multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines
  • Must have and maintain a valid license and a good driving record
  • Sharp news judgment
  • Ability to work well independently and with a team
  • A self-starter and who can generate his or her own story ideas on a daily basis
  • Ability to demonstrate enterprise reporting and creativity in storytelling
  • Exemplary communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to maintain an active social media presence to build your brand and solicit original story ideas
  • Knowledge of the community of Aiken, S.C., and surrounding cities a plus
