Audio Managing Editor and Assistant Professional Practice Professor at KBIA-FM

The Missouri School of Journalism (University of Missouri-Columbia) seeks applications for an audio producer specializing in journalism and newsroom management, and an assistant professional practice professor.  This Producer will serve as the Audio Managing Editor at KBIA, an Edward R. Murrow national award–winning radio station and a working laboratory for students of The Missouri School of Journalism.

Responsibilities include assisting KBIA newsroom leaders in planning, supervising and producing news programming for radio broadcast, including daily news and in-depth reports, as well as public affairs programming. This producer will also engage in classroom teaching, faculty committee assignments and service to the profession of audio journalism.  In addition, the faculty Audio Managing Editor will work on and facilitate cross-platform content with the school’s media holdings, which include a daily newspaper (the Columbia Missourian), a city magazine (Vox), a commercial NBC-affiliated television station (KOMU-TV), an NPR member station (KBIA-FM) and a digital statewide business publication (Missouri Business Alert).   

Specific Duties include :

  • Managing the hands-on tasks related to the daily news component of the KBIA news operation, including oversight of students editors and reporters.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with community leaders in the development, coordination, and implementation of news and public affairs programming.
  • Plan, assign and oversee cross-newsroom reporting assignments and projects as appropriate, incorporating the school’s new journalism courses that now offer cross-newsroom experiences.
  • Assist as a member of the KBIA news team with breaking news and community coverage as needed.
  • Coach student journalists on storytelling, writing, editing, the investigative process, news judgement, ethics, and principles of journalism. Train and oversee students anchoring the morning and afternoon newscasts.
  • Teach a journalism class each semester.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position may require nights and occasional weekends.  Schedules will depend on coverage and production needs, which will be determined in consultation with the KBIA-FM Director.

The renewable, 12 month position carries an academic rank of Assistant Professional Practice Professor (non-tenure track).  Under University policy, the teaching load for professional practice faculty is four traditional courses a semester or the equivalent mix of traditional (classroom) and clinical (newsroom) teaching.  The workload will be comprised of 20 percent classroom teaching, 60 percent newsroom teaching, and 20 percent service (work on behalf of the School, the University, and the industry).   

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree is necessary.  Two to three years of experience in public radio news broadcasting, interviewing and production is necessary.

  • The ethical judgment and skill to teach young journalists how to make tough calls on their feet.
  • A proven track record of producing quality news coverage.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • A deep, applied understanding of how to use visual and audio journalism, digital video, and social media to enhance journalistic storytelling.
  • The ability to juggle a vibrant daily newsroom’s many needs with ambitious, long-term projects.
  • A track record as a collegial collaborator in a newsroom without silos.
