American Progress is seeking a Digital Marketing Specialist to help promote progressive policies and ideas among targeted audiences. The Digital Marketing Specialist will be a part of the Digital Strategy team, which is responsible for marketing American Progress’ work to highly segmented audiences, including policymakers and their staff; national, state, and local advocates; policy organizations and think tanks; and more. This is a hybrid position located in Washington, D.C.

The ideal candidate is a team player who has experience with digital marketing as well as current user experience best practices and seeks to leverage websites, email, and social media to engage, grow, and educate audiences. American Progress is looking for someone who understands the technical and design aspects of various digital marketing mediums and the different approaches necessary to help ensure that the organization’s digital messaging achieves its intended purpose. This person must be a fast learner who is passionate about progressive values, has excellent attention to detail, and is skilled at managing multiple tasks in a demanding and fast-paced environment. They will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.

In a cover letter, the applicant should describe their experience working in online communications, including with customer relationship management software, website content management systems, or other digital marketing tools.


  • Manage web and other technical Digital Strategy team projects, ensure that relevant stakeholders are informed on crucial project information, and manage scheduling of project meetings.
  • Collaborate with the team to support email marketing management efforts, including building and scheduling emails; tracking and analyzing email performance metrics; and maintaining and improving email lists.
  • Maintain, evaluate, and support enhancement of American Progress’ email marketing automation efforts.
  • Routinely conduct research and present usable findings on digital marketing best practices, events, and tools relevant to the work of the Digital Strategy team and the broader Communications department.
  • Support efforts to ensure quality assurance by conducting reviews of content and other deliverables, such as web pages, articles, emails, and technology solutions.
  • Work with the Director of Email Marketing to maintain, train, and support American Progress’ marketing platform user community.
  • Represent the Digital Strategy team in trainings and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to five years of experience in digital marketing and online communications, ideally at a nonprofit, public policy, or political organization, and/or at a marketing or creative agency that serves organizations of those kinds.
  • Experience with metrics reporting with particular emphasis on engagement effectiveness, but also digital marketing metrics more generally.
  • Digital project management experience and familiarity with collaborative cloud software such as Airtable, Google Workspace, and/or SharePoint.
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar contact relationship management software.
  • Working knowledge of using HTML to support production of emails, web forms, and web pages.
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Experience and skill in managing multiple tasks and projects under tight deadlines while producing high-quality results, such as campaign launches, research, regular email send schedules, and event marketing.
  • Self-starter able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ values and ideals.
  • Familiarity with progressive public policy is a plus.
  • Experience working with digital marketing software such as customer relationship management software, content management systems, email service providers, and marketing automation software is a plus.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; proofreading skills are a plus.
