JGPR is actively seeking a Copywriter for its North Andover, Massachusetts office.

The successful candidate will be able to fit into our easygoing work culture, but also pivot and react quickly when crises emerge. The Copywriter is expected to develop positive relationships with clients, and with local, regional, and statewide print and television reporters, editors, and assignment desks.

The Copywriter will have a primary focus on education, but also will be asked to work with municipal, public safety, non-profit, and for-profit clients as well. The Copywriter will draw upon their news judgment and writing abilities on a day?to?day basis, while building an understanding of client relations and PR strategy.

Past successful JGPR employees have had experience writing on deadline for a daily or weekly news publication or other news outlet.

Content creation

The Copywriter’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing and copy-editing press releases and other collateral, with an eye toward publication-ready content
  • Shooting photos or video as needed
  • Consulting with public sector clients proactively to address their communications needs
  • In partnership with the Video Division, developing ideas for visual storytelling and execute upon those ideas
  • Pitching feature stories to generate coverage for clients
  • Coordinating coverage of planned events for media
  • Assisting in the delivery of information and facilitate coverage of unplanned breaking news events

This position requires availability no more than once per month to serve in an on-call capacity, responding to breaking news as it happens after hours or on weekends. This responsibility is shared among the entire public relations team on a rotating basis.

Client relations

The Copywriter’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Remaining engaged with new and existing clients through regular check-ins via phone, video chat, or in-person
  • Attending client meetings and events as needed
  • Consulting with clients on general strategy, both long-term and in crises
  • Taking an active role in JGPR's measurement efforts, showcasing the return on investment to clients
  • Conducting media relations
  • Directing junior staff in creating reports on coverage of client stories In collaboration with management.

The Copywriter will have opportunities in business development, special projects, and multimedia. The Copywriter will be eligible for bonuses and commissions based on performance, company success and new business brought into the company.

Professional development will be available in areas critical to the company’s ongoing success, including public relations, marketing, and crisis communication strategies.

The Copywriter will report to the Senior Account Executive, but will have regular contact with other members of the Leadership Team.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience interviewing, researching, and writing for a print or online media outlet, or in a public relations setting.
  • Strong enterprise reporting and/or feature writing experience
  • Deep familiarity with how public entities operate on a day-to-day basis
  • Strong copy?editing skills
  • Deep and evolving knowledge of AP style.
  • Ability to effectively multitask and manage a diverse set of editorial responsibilities
  • Knowledge of web design using WordPress, as well as a working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, are welcome but not required
