The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World is seeking a reporter to cover sports ranging from major Division I athletic contests to local high school sporting events. Lawrence and Douglas County combine to create an excellent sports community. The community is home to the University of Kansas and its nationally-recognized basketball program, two small colleges, multiple high schools, and an active scene for running, biking and other outdoor sports. The Journal-World is seeking a strong writer who has a natural curiosity that goes beyond the scores and stats. We value journalists who have the background and diversity of experiences to not just cover the major events but also tell the broad stories of sports and the people who play them. While a degree in journalism is preferred, we are open to a variety of experience levels, including recent graduates who can demonstrate strong writing and reporting skills. The position includes a mix of night and weekend work, involves some travel, and the ability to write on tight deadlines for both our print and online products.
The Journal-World operates a six-day per week daily newspaper, and two 24/7 news websites, LJWorld.com and KUsports.com. The position will be assigned particular teams and sports to cover, but also must be flexible to work collaboratively with a team of approximately a dozen journalists who cover our community of approximately 100,000 people. Located just outside the Kansas City metro area, Lawrence is a vibrant, growing community with an attractive downtown, many entertainment options and a population that values and supports local journalism.
Applicants should send a cover letter, resumé and three writing samples to Sports Editor Matt Tait at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applicant review is expected to begin the week of Sept. 12, 2022.
