Job Description

Director of New Content Initiatives

Hearst Newspapers (HNP) is hiring a Director of New Content Initiatives who is passionate about journalism and service to local readers. The ideal candidate is someone who can understand the interplay of content and audience and innovation. In this role, you’ll work closely with a cross-department team on new efforts for the HNP markets that seek to accelerate our growth. You will be involved in developing new content strategies and new audience extensions as well as structuring projects and managing timelines and outcomes for our new work. The position will work with our central Product team and the HNP DevHub, a team of developers, designers, project managers and editorial strategists who collaborate with local newsrooms to create best-in-class digital experiences. We build new editorial teams and make things like election results pages, searchable databases, severe weather trackers, elegantly designed alternative story forms and whatever else you can dream up.

  • Be the editorial point person on all new initiatives and/or projects with our markets
  • Be able to compile, consolidate and analyze data to support decision-making
  • Collaborate with partners across departments on efforts that will drive audience, growth
  • Work with stakeholders to conceive of and help define success for new efforts
  • Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills; comfort providing and taking feedback.


Ideal candidates will be able to showcase one or more of the following. We do not expect candidates to be proficient in every area.

  • A demonstrated understanding of digital content consumption trends for digital news audiences and/or work in newsrooms
  • Prior newsroom experience, preferably managing content and strategy
  • Prior experience in analytics, data analysis and reporting
  • Familiarity with audience analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Chartbeat, etc.) and newsletter platforms
  • Ability to convert findings in actionable recommendations and effectively communicate to others.
  • Prior project management, editorial leadership experience preferred

The Basics

  • This position is full-time.
  • This position will have a Monday-to-Friday daytime schedule but weekend and evening work may be required as news warrants.
  • Remote work friendly. The team is based in San Francisco and New York City, but we can employ in 20 other states, as well.
