We are seeking an editor to oversee the reporting/editing of the Seeley Swan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder is a community weekly newspaper in the quaint town of Seeley Lake, Montana. Seeley Lake, flanked by the Mission and Swan mountain ranges, is situated on one of Montana most scenic drives, Hwy 83. During spring, summer and autumn, enjoy birding, wildlife viewing, fishing, camping, canoeing, boating, hiking and golfing. Mountain bikers can explore hundreds of miles of roads and trails, which become a world-class cross-country ski trail system in winter. Snowmobilers can explore over 350 miles of groomed trails. Enjoy the serenity and beauty of this wonderland year-round!

The editor should be able to paginate in InDesign. Mullen Newspaper Company offers flexible scheduling, a Simple IRA plan, 4-day 36-hr work week, and paid time off. Veteran and new journalists are encouraged to apply - we will help train the right candidate if experience is lacking.

As Editor, you will have a good sense of what makes an interesting angle to a story, to juggle all the moving parts of publications. You will plan, coordinate, review and edit content and decide which ideas should be pursued and which should get dropped in order to meet quality and accuracy standards for The Seeley Swan Pathfinder.

*Proven working experience as an editor

*Strong writing/editing/proofreading skills and an excellent portfolio

*Hands on experience with InDesign, Photoshop or other publishing tools

*Excellent written skills in English

*An eye for detail along with critical thinking

*Prioritizing and multitasking

*BS degree in Journalism or significant experience in related field


*Edit news content prior to publication

*Ensure the pages are designed and sent to the printer by deadline each week

*Write at least two bylined stories each week

*Ensure contract writers meet deadlines

*Submit contract invoices for editorial freelancers

*Assist in writing and editing content for special sections/work with freelancers to provide content for sections

*Coordinate online or print publishing cycle and manage content areas

*Suggest stories and generate headline ideas in alignment with targeted audience’s preferences

*Oversee layout (artwork, design, photography) and check content for accuracy and errors

*Proofread, edit and improve stories or pieces

*Recruit and manage writers and reporters

*Cooperate and liaise with designers, photographers, advertising reps, writers, artists etc.

*Comply with media law and ethical guidelines

*Meet deadlines and budget requirements
