California politics reporter

The Bay Area News Group is looking for a political reporter to lead our coverage as California confronts the midterm elections, a conservative court and rival red states. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the job serves the Mercury News and East Bay Times and its partner publications throughout the Golden State. While swarms of political reporters trip over each other in Washington, D.C., the Bay Area and Sacramento serve as the front lines for many of the nation's biggest policy battles, from abortion to guns to climate change. No other place in the country can claim two politicians who are first (Kamala Harris) and second (Nancy Pelosi) in line to the Oval Office, and a governor who is running what looks more like a campaign for president than for re-election. Our ideal candidate for this job will be a natural at capturing the California and Bay Area angles on the political stories that everyone is talking about and revealing uncovered perspectives that they soon will be sharing. If you are bursting with energy, ideas and a willingness to punch above your weight, we'd love to hear how you would take on the Bay Area News Group's politics beat. A minimum of three years' experience reporting for a professional news site or publication is required. Experience covering politics and additional language fluency are a plus. If you are interested, send us your resume, a cover letter, links to five recently published stories, and your best two ideas for political stories that nobody else is telling but Californians need to know in 2022. Email submissions with the subject line "Political Reporter Job" to Mike Frankel, Assistant Managing Editor/Investigations, Data and Enterprise, at mfrankel@bayareanewsgroup.com.
