The Hillsboro Banner, an award-winning weekly newspaper in Hillsboro, N.D., is seeking a college intern to remotely cover one of our area high school sports teams.
This position would include covering one sports team in the fall and producing one 600 to 650 story per week for our publication. We have sufficient photo staff but could use more writing muscle. So we're seeking someone who could listen to a radio broadcast or watch a live stream of one of our local teams and follow up with a coaching interview afterward to talk about the game and the team's performance the past week. Copy deadline would be 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Pay would be $200 per week and, if the right fit can be found, there is a possibility of continuing the internship in the winter and next spring. There's also a requirement for a short essay as part of our funding at the end of the internship. Most teams in the area have a 10- to 12-week season.
Right now, we are exploring the possibility of needing volleyball coverage this fall, wrestling coverage in the winter and track and field coverage in the spring.
Interested applicants can send a cover letter, resume and writing samples to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Banner has won more than 600 awards the past 10 years in the North Dakota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest and is the only newspaper in North Dakota and South Dakota to win the Best of the Dakotas award four times in that span.
