The assistant news editor will:
Work with reporters to master the basics, challenge assumptions and reward innovation.
Use news analytics to help reporters develop beat strategies and coverage plans and make day-to-day decisions.
Foster an environment of innovation, looking for new ways to tell stories on existing platforms – and new platforms on which to tell stories and connect with our audience.
Edit copy carefully, striving for consistent style, thoroughgoing ethics and the highest possible degree of accuracy.
Collaborate with our visual and digital departments at every opportunity to strengthen our report.
Coach reporters to develop work habits that build in quality and accuracy from the beginning of the process to the end, and grow no matter where they are in their career path.
The job requires a minimum of three years of experience at a daily newspaper in reporting and editing positions, a great work ethic, a team mindset and lots of creativity. You should be able to work collaboratively, balancing the demands of digital and print platforms, editing stories quickly for the web and then turning attention to more enterprising pieces for the weekend and beyond.
You must be able to help reporters stay on top of the news, handle data, spot trends and hold the powerful to account with enterprise and investigative coverage.
The Times Free Press is part of a financially solid, privately owned media company with a newsroom that values mission-driven journalism and community service. The newspaper has been named the best in the state by the Tennessee Press Association for seven of the past eight years. Plus, the city is a phenomenal place to live. It is one of the top outdoor destinations in the country and has become a magnet for major industries over the past decade, and our internet is the stuff of legends. There is a thriving downtown along the Tennessee River, and the city is within a two-hour drive to Atlanta and Nashville.
