The Reno Gazette Journal/rgj.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a full-time news director in Reno, Nevada. The news director, the top editor in the newsroom, is responsible for leading a team of reporters, editors and photojournalists in providing high-impact journalism, using data and analysis to zero in on the topics and issues most important to key audiences.

The editor will coach reporters and editors to make strategic decisions about coverage and direct and champion investigative and watchdog journalism. The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader comfortable being the public face of the Reno Gazette Journal and will work to increase the visibility of the news organization in the city, county and state. This newsroom also provides news to the USA TODAY Network and collaborates closely with other Gannett newsrooms across the West.

We are looking for someone who can be a leader on breaking news such as large wildfires and is battle-tested. This editor should also have investigative drive and a track record of launching and overseeing high-impact investigations.

As news director, this editor should be the expert eye on stories – from formation to final edits, helping the RGJ staff conceptualize lines of reporting and make solid decisions about allocating staff time and resources for maximum impact. The news director should be able to provide coaching on structure, accuracy, clarity and readability. This editor must also have a strong grasp of journalism ethics and apply those in practice, spotting and resolving any legal landmines that may arise.

The news director must have a solid grasp of audience acquisition strategies, and will work with line editors and frontline journalists to maintain a mix of content that keeps our subscriptions growing. This editor will play a key role in recruiting staff, and coaching and training team members, be they early in their careers or well advanced. We are looking for a newsroom leader who can foster a collaborative, healthy culture where the entire team is respected and valued, and everyone has opportunities for growth.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the digital production team and design studio daily, plan content across products and platforms, and set the editorial tone. This editor will spearhead grant proposals and fundraising initiatives to grow the RGJ’s newsroom, conduct outreach in the community, and demand transparency from local government agencies.

Responsibilities:

· Oversee the Reno Gazette Journal’s online and print journalism and ensure it serves reader needs and meets high standards

· Leverage reader data, insights, and team core competencies to execute high-quality journalism with impact

· Establish and support strategic and career goals for editors, visual journalists and reporters. 

· Seek partners within the geographic coverage area as well as nationally to support ground-breaking journalism.

· Coordinate coverage with other Gannett newspapers in the West and across the USA Today Network.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

· More than five years of editing/media management experience

· Strong line-editing skills

· Strong people-management skills

· Strong problem-solving skills

· A facility for promoting the Reno Gazette Journal, its journalism and journalists to the wider community

· The ability to lead teams in person and remotely

· Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy

· Strong communication and collaboration skills, both internally and externally  

· Success in deadline-driven environments.  

· Exceptional planning and organizational skills.  

· Social-media and SEO knowledge.  

· Self-motivation and self-direction.  

· Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP style.  

· A strong grasp of the issues and personalities that make the Reno area and Nevada tick, or proven ability to learn these quickly.

· The ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment

· Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking

Candidates may have a bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
