The San Francisco Standard is seeking a versatile and experienced editor to serve as our weekend editor. This is a fulltime, 4-day-a-week position, normally Friday through Monday. Primary duties will include running the daily news file from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday, and helping prepare weekend stories in advance. The weekend editor will be responsible for identifying and assigning stories that might break on a weekend, scanning wire services and posting stories as appropriate, and writing stories on occasion. The weekend editor will also be responsible for posting all weekend stories to social media, and will play a key role in creative experiments that might drive interest and attention on weekends.

The successful candidate will have excellent news judgment, strong writing skills and a careful eye for copy. Deep knowledge of San Francisco and the Bay Area would be a major asset, and some knowledge of the city and the region are required.  Experience managing reporters would also be a major asset. We’re looking for someone with at least five years of newsroom experience, preferably in a breaking news environment. Some experience with the production side of online publishing is also required.

The Weekend Editor will be part of the editorial leadership team, working closely with the Editor in Chief and others to establish coverage strategies. Unlike most positions at The Standard, the Weekend Editor may work remotely most of the time, with only one day per week in the office required.

The Weekend Editor position is an opportunity for an ambitious journalist to play a key role in building a new kind of metro news organization. We offer very competitive salaries commensurate with the high cost of living, as well as excellent benefits and stock options.

Interested candidates are asked to submit a resume and a short cover letter setting out why you want this job.

The San Francisco Standard is a startup company that’s developing new approaches to local news and information, serving everyone who has a stake in the future of San Francisco.
