Colorado Sun Product Producer 

Responsibilities: A digital producer will be part of The Colorado Sun’s product team and contribute to daily news coverage while working to develop and improve The Sun’s internal and audience-facing products. The work will include learning to develop, maintain and improve the systems that keep a modern digital newsroom running.

Duties: The producer will work closely with The Sun’s product and audience teams as well as outside vendors on daily duties and projects to build and improve new tools for the newsroom and our audience.

  • Internal newsroom tool development. Assist in brainstorming, developing and launching new tools and workflows to help our journalists do their jobs with ease and improve our readers’ experience and engagement on our website and newsletters. Experience with Coda.io, Google Workspace, Slack, Zapier and other platforms. Ability to problem solve with our team and vendors when technical problems arise. Help train staff on the digital tools needed to do their jobs effectively.

  • Reader-facing tool development. Work with staff and vendors to identify, develop and improve the look and performance of our website, newsletters and other engagement tools. Assist in brainstorming, developing and launching new tools for readers to understand their worlds better, e.g. voter guides, data visualizations, maps, etc.

  • Newsletters: Help construct and write The Sunriser, the daily aggregation of news from The Sun and other Colorado news outlets. Assist in the production, development and delivery of other Sun newsletters.

  • Social media: Help support The Sun’s work to engage new audiences on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other platforms.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Problem-solving mindset. Many of the projects that this producer will be working on involve building or improving tools to solve problems for readers and journalists alike.

  • Web development. Experience with HTML, CSS a must. Experience with Javascript, Python and low-code tools like Zapier a plus.

  • Wordpress and Mailchimp (or similar CMS and ESP) experience. Good understanding of how a modern content management system works. Wordpress Gutenberg experience a plus.

  • Newsroom experience preferred but not required. We’re building the newsroom of the future and seeking digital natives who can identify trends -- or create them -- to expand The Sun’s reach as a local, reliable news source.  

  • Strong news judgment. The ability to maintain journalistic ethics as well as be engaging for readers. Being able to spot news angles and give readers necessary context.

  • Basic graphic design. The ability to use tools like Canva to design professional-looking graphics to help promote Sun content.

  • Collaborative mindset. The person who fits this position can work creatively with others as well as develop and pursue projects on their own that help The Sun in its mission. 

Salary: $65,000-75,000 + medical, dental and vision insurance, 401k, benefits
