Grass roots community journalism is the flame holder for democracy. Studies show that communities with active, vibrant newspapers are better run and more successful than those where public officials act with impunity. Our two community newspapers have been holding elected officials to account since before the Civil War. The Mason County Democrat and Fulton Democrat newspapers are family owned by a husband and wife team who have enjoyed their long careers in the newspaper business. Both newspapers have won many awards from the Illinois Press Association, including recognition numerous times for enterprise and investigative reporting. One of the 1st Place awards we recently received was for Best Community Promotion. Of all the awards we could have gotten, this one spoke to us the most because promoting our communities is one of our most important missions. We are pleased to add that we have successfully coached writers on our staff to earn their own awards.
Over the years we have seen many changes and challenges in the newspaper business. While other papers have declined in circulation or closed, we have grown into being the largest paid circulation newspapers in our respective counties. Our readers are loyal and appreciative of the work we do.
Our newspapers are located in Central Illinois where there are abundant opportunities for those who enjoy outdoor recreation, whether it is hiking and kayaking or hunting and fishing. In fact, the Illinois River and Havana’s Riverfront Park are just a block away from our headquarters. There are also many historical and cultural assets, including Dickson Mounds State Museum and Lincoln’s New Salem State Park.
The job we are offering is for the Mason County Democrat in Havana, although our writers contribute to both newspapers.
The ideal person for this position will be curious and interested in others and their stories. They are also good listeners and fact checkers. Story telling is intrinsic to what we do, so these stories should answer all of the readers’ questions and be told in an organized way. The job is a combination of hard news and features. We encourage engaging readers with bright leads and colorful phrasing where appropriate, as well as clearly stated leads and informative quotes when possible, in the hard news.
