Our mission is to impact, inform and empower the Flint, Mich. community by writing quality content that fills news gaps for our community. This includes being watchdogs over local government, solutions journalism, investigative reporting, and great storytelling.

Flint Beat is an award-winning newsroom and we are hiring a full-time reporter to cover Flint’s city hall. The right person will have the ability to write original and compelling content by taking an in-depth look at Flint’s local government and reporting on the city council and administration as well as crime and police.

Candidates will have the opportunity to develop deeply reported enterprise stories while also handling the daily requirements of the beat. The right candidate will continually work to find, shape, and pitch underreported stories.

In addition, reporters are expected to work closely with the visual team to identify stories that merit video, illustrations, infographics, and photographs.

Reporters should have knowledge of current events and an inquiring mind on issues involving Flint.

This person is flexible and able to adapt quickly in a fast-paced newsroom. The ideal candidate for this role should be someone who is open to feedback and wants to get better every day. The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills
  • At least two years of experience reporting in a professional newsroom
  • Ability to work across teams to collaborate on story ideas, cover breaking news, in-depth, explanatory pieces, and other content coverage
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and understanding of diverse perspectives
  • An understanding of how to conceive and execute high-impact stories for a digital consumer
