Reporter, SportBusiness

SportBusiness is seeking an experienced, multifunctional journalist to join the SportBusiness 24 news team. This is remote position for a United States-based journalist.

Business Area: SportBusiness Group is a leading supplier of information to the sports business industry. 

SportBusiness 24 is our news service, keeping the industry up to date via editorial teams based in three different continents. It is widely read among leading executives across the global sports business. 

The Big Picture: As the third member of SportBusiness’s US news team, your news and feature output will help that segment grow and maintain SportBusiness 24’s position as the best international sports news service on the market.

Reporting will be on all aspects of sports business but with a particular focus on North America’s fast-growing sports betting sector.

You will develop relationships with senior executives in sports, carrying out interviews and leverage relationships to unearth information.

Most reporting will be conducted remotely, but there will be opportunities to travel to industry and sports events. You will report directly to the US Editor.

Detailed responsibilities: 

  • Write news articles: identify stories from different markets and industry sectors; research background; write stories and publish them on our website
  • Develop long-form features that provide a deeper understanding of the business
  • Liaise with the US Editor on story selection and subbing
  • Edit the work of your colleagues in the SportBusiness America team
  • Update and ensure accuracy of content on SportBusiness.com news website, including images
  • Post news and breaking information on social media
  • Preserve the SportBusiness reputation for accurate, responsible reporting, high-quality writing and care for sources
  • Establish a detailed knowledge of the sports business industry 
  • Interview executives and develop a network of reliable contacts in the industry

Key Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • Demonstrable ability to write accurately and coherently on deadline – you will need an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Ability to compile copy quickly and accurately, building background information into stories
  • Organisational skills and able to adhere to strict editorial deadlines
  • Attention to detail and research skills
  • Being able to communicate effectively and confidently with leading executives 

Desirable:

  • Experience working in B2B journalism
  • At least one to two years of professional media experience
  • Knowledge of the global sporting landscape
  • Second language
  • Strong sports/agency sector industry contacts
  • Track record of breaking exclusive and in-depth stories across different topics

Reports to: US Editor

Direct reports: None

Salary: Commensurate with experience (Est. $40,000)

Working hours: Full-time. Normal working hours may occasionally adjust based on events on the sports calendar.
