Reports To: Assistant Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications


The Editorial and Content Manager is responsible for the creation and storytelling of content related to the school’s internal programs, including Academics, Arts, Student Life, and others. The primary role of this position is to manage the conception, writing, design, and production of the Mercersburg Academy magazine as well as the strategic direction and implementation of all news and human-interest content. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, working together to serve the greater school community and to support the overall mission of the school.


Responsibilities for Mercersburg Academy Magazine
Produce Mercersburg Academy magazine from concept to completion two times each calendar year, which includes (but is not limited to):

  • Create the editorial theme for each issue in collaboration with an editorial board that consists of colleagues from Academics, Admission, Advancement, Marketing and Communications, and Student Life.

  • Create a production schedule to meet deadlines and to allow time for various groups to review the magazine.

  • Assign (to write or interview) features, profiles, and other content to student interns, faculty, staff, and alumni and write other content not assigned. Hire and supervise freelance writers.

  • Supervise the magazine's primary photography vendor, hire other freelance photographers as necessary, and select imagery from existing photo assets for each issue.

  • Supervise the magazine’s contract designer, which includes making strategic design decisions and managing the creation of the magazine covers.

  • Work with the Creative Technology Director to review and approve the design direction for each magazine.

  • Work with the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations and student interns to write and edit class notes and obituaries.

  • Copyedit and proofread the magazine for accuracy, paying careful attention that the content is aligned with the school’s style guide.

  • Review and approve digital and color proofs and conduct in-person press checks to personally approve press sheets.


Responsibilities for Campus News
In conjunction with the members of the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications, actively stimulate and manage the creation of all news and human-interest content.

  • Create a strategic, detailed news/content plan for each school year, meeting weekly with the Assistant Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications to adjust and update the plan as the year progresses. 

  • Post news on the school’s website and homepage, and locate corresponding photos.

  • Maintain effective relations with relevant reporters in the media, and maintain a clean, up-to-date media list for dissemination of releases, etc.

  • Work independently to seek out stories from faculty, staff, and students.

  • Be available to work evenings and weekends on occasion to cover campus news.


Other Responsibilities

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications to produce original content in the form of print, video, photography, podcasts, infographics, etc. that supports internal departments.

  • Work with the office to cover events on campus, including Commencement, Baccalaureate, Convocation, Candlelight Service, and other major school events.

  • Assist with copy editing and proofreading emails, print pieces, web pages, etc. for the office.

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and other external constituents.

  • Incorporate strategic design messaging into all school publications, as appropriate.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must enjoy collaborating with others, brainstorming ideas, and creating fresh and original content.

  • Must be an exceptional copy editor, writer, and project manager with strong attention to detail.

  • Independent, communicative, and responsive, with the ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities.

  • Excited by a fast-paced, results-oriented marketing team and environment.

  • Excellent storytelling skills.

  • Minimal experience in photography and videography and/or willing to learn how to operate the equipment.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.

  • Five years of communications experience; publication experience preferred.

  • Experience in an independent school, college, university, or nonprofit setting is preferred.

  • Skills in Google Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Canva (or other design software), and social media channels.

  • Knowledge of content management tools for websites and photo archival systems.

Environment: Work is performed in an indoor/office environment where the noise level ranges from quiet to moderate. Work will also be performed outside an office environment to visit donors. These environments will vary.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to travel in all modes of transportation; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate office machinery; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
