Description:

Here’s a job with a foot in both of our award-winning newsroom’s worlds. First, there’s our internal newsroom community, where teamwork, hard work and camaraderie fuel our work. Then there is the focus of our efforts: Our readers and the communities in which they live.

Our community editor and newsroom manager plays an important role with both.

As newsroom manager, you’re a key manager at the Republican-American, Sunday Republican and rep-am.com, our regional, locally-owned newspaper and website based in Waterbury, Conn.

Working closely with and reporting to the managing editor, the newsroom manager coordinates bills and budgets; handles reader questions to the newsroom; and encourages and aids staff and freelancers in matters of expenses, payroll and basic IT requests. The newsroom manager also serves as secretary of the company’s nonprofit charity, the Greater Waterbury Campership Fund.

As community editor, this supervisor also manages community news as editor in charge of the news and obituary clerks and the newsroom librarian. These community news briefs and items are published on rep-am.com and in the print edition. Editorial duties also include making annual election results happen in print and online. The potential exists for involvement with community events or expanded online content.

This job demands confidentiality; Excel proficiency; teamwork; excellent organization and the ability to change priorities quickly in a fast-paced news environment; the ability to manage an electronic payroll system and vacation schedule; and the ability to type at least 45 WPM. Customer service skills a must for handling questions from the public. The ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of local news, of our journalistic standards and of our larger mission and obligation to our readers. News experience or AP style knowledge is a plus but not required.

EOE. Benefits include 401K. Email cover letter, resume with Newsroom Administrator in the subject line to ra-hr@rep-am.com. Deadline to apply: June 30.
