Raw Story is seeking an experienced reporter to focus on social justice and social movements. The reporter's beat will center on contemporary issues in politics, religion, science, criminal justice and culture and how they impact historically underrepresented groups. The reporter will also cover emerging social movements throughout the US political spectrum, with a focus on racial justice and equality.
Raw Story’s social justice reporter will develop investigative reports, write features and contribute to breaking news. Candidates should include links to 3-5 clips that demonstrate insightful examples of feature reporting and investigative journalism.
Raw Story, a progressive news website founded in 2004, has published over 240,000 articles and produces original content by a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist. Its reporters and editors have gone on to work for The New York Times, Bloomberg, and Politico. Its reporters are represented by the Washington-Baltimore Newsguild, the same union that represents the Washington Post.
Raw Story’s recent original reporting has focused on homegrown extremism, which went largely ignored by the mainstream media until the Capitol Hill insurrection in January. Its coverage has been the focus of recent articles in Editor & Publisher. In 2022, E&P celebrated Raw Story’s Jordan Green’s courageous reporting in the feature article, “At the Front Lines, on the Homefront — Domestic extremism deserves astute, relentless coverage, but there are few journalists on the beat.” Green also appeared on the magazine’s podcast (“Behind Raw Story’s progressive mission”).
Since 2018, Raw Story has warned of the growing menace of anti-Semitic, anti-government extremist groups – the same groups that would later organize the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Such investigative reporting includes Arun Gupta’s 2018 exclusives “Here’s the truth about the pro-Trump “Proud Boys” and their connections to neo-Nazis” and “‘Damn straight I support white pride’: Far-right organizer Haley Adams embraces white nationalism in exclusive interview.” In the past year, Jordan Green has been at the vanguard of extremist movements. A month before the Capitol riots, Green highlighted the coming anti-government threat in three pieces: Dec. 12: “Anybody got a bazooka?” Proud Boys wreak havoc on DC as Mike Flynn and others rally Donald Trump loyalists,” Dec 13: “A “rise in white supremacy”: Black pastor alarmed by Proud Boys night of violence and vandalism in DC,” and Dec. 21: “Proud Boys rallies result in violence against people of color — but their driving ideology is hatred against women.”
Following the riot, Arun Gupta summarized the long history of U.S. law enforcement going soft on domestic extremism, “Years of impunity for right-wing extremists began with the Bundys and led to the failed Capitol Hill coup.”
Jordan Green’s Jan. 6, 2021 report: “We’re gonna kill Congress”: Trump’s far-right supporters promise violence at today’s DC protests” — published the morning of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot — predicted exactly what protesters would try to do. More recently, Green uncovered the role of a Giuliani aide in Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election: “Exclusive: White House aide relayed information from Giuliani research team to Trump in effort to overturn the 2020 election.”
