MediaNews Group is the parent company for the Reading Eagle. We offer local news and information websites and mobile apps offering rich multimedia experiences across the nation.

Description: The Reading Eagle is looking for a full-time, creative and ambitious reporter to cover the business community in southeast Pennsylvania for our daily and weekly print and online editions.

This person will work with the regional business editor on coverage for Business Weekly, which spotlights the business community.

The candidate should have strong reporting, writing, organizational and interpersonal skills, be able to take photos and work within a team. A knowledge of social media is essential. The ability to meet deadlines is a must.

Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

A degree in journalism or communications is required. Must submit clips or a link to a portfolio with a resume and application.

 

Skills and abilities: Excellent language skills plus understanding of news gathering and reporting in the digital age. Requires strong knowledge of the use of grammar, spelling, headlines and photographs, along with understanding of AP and local style, news judgment and awareness of the community. Requires extensive computer use, rapid and accurate typing ability, expertise with social media and digital journalism. 

 

Contact with others: Must be able to deal effectively and professionally with colleagues and supervisors across departments and properties. Must be able to resolve potential conflicts gracefully, negotiating changes in content with assigning editors  gracefully and to the satisfaction of all. Must be capable of gathering information through interviews, documents, Internet research and other investigative efforts. Must be prepared to professionally represent the organization in public, while conducting interviews, attending events or covering spot news. Works in a collegial manner with co-workers, supervisors and especially the public.

 

Creativity/Critical Thinking: Must be able to self-generate compelling story ideas related to assigned topic or beat. Must be resourceful and innovative in developing sources and/or obtaining information, often on deadline. Must exercise news judgment and critical thinking to  identify appropriate angles for news stories and ongoing coverage. Must be sensitive to the nuances of words and actions, assuring that reporting does not perpetuate stereotypes or generalizations about race, sex, age, etc. Must be able to identify holes in stories and dig relentlessly to determine actual facts and/or the truth of matters. Has a good knowledge of libel law and understands ethical standards for fairness.

 

Mobility: Moves easily among assignments, which depending on the post, may be general or beat-specific. Able to cover events, meetings and breaking news in the field, providing own means of transportation. May require long periods of sitting, standing or walking to get to the scene of a story.

 

Punctuality/Reliability: Must be punctual, arriving at work on time, communicating with supervisors regarding scheduling and time management. Must be flexible, as news often calls for working odd hours, such as evenings or weekends. 

 

Supervision received: Job requires a self-starter, expected to take initiative, who will receive 

regular direction and advice from the supervising editor and other editors as appropriate.
