Demographics and Equity Editor
Location flexible
The Southern California News Group is launching a demographics and equity team to better cover the region with in-depth reporting, research and reader engagement. The team will examine criminal justice, healthcare, poverty and education in underserved communities and religious freedom and discrimination.
SCNG is looking for an experienced journalist to lead this team on a full-time basis. The editor not only will coordinate the other team members and edit their stories in conjunction with a senior editor but also will write on occasion. The ideal candidate should be able to identify the stories news organizations too often overlook and have ideas of how to approach them. We’re looking for someone who both thrives with autonomy and enjoys the collaboration of a team.
Duties include:
Help identify strong candidates to build the diversity and equity team. Note: Some members will be dedicated to it while others primarily will be assigned to other groups and work with this team occasionally.
Coordinate the members of the team to provide the organization and communication needed.
Edit stories produced by other team members.
Report and write stories that help readers better understand the communities we cover.
Work with the photo and graphics teams to make sure we explore all the visual ways stories can be told or enhanced.
Discuss stories from the beginning of the process with the audience engagement editor and digital producers to provide the best possible opportunity for these stories to reach readers.
Required qualifications:
At least three years of professional journalism experience.
Ability to edit and write copy in a clear fashion, free of errors and using AP style.
Experience with social media for the purposes of reader engagement.
Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred qualifications:
Fluency or at least conversational ability in a language other than English that would help us reach communities we hope to cover better. Spanish, Vietnamese and Mandarin are the primary examples, but there are others.
Some supervisory experience.
At least five years of professional journalism experience with some of that spent covering issues of demographics and equity.
Work environment:
Hybrid work environment. Office access is available but most of the work is done remotely. The team lead will report directly to the senior editor who is based in Anaheim, so that could be the lead’s home office if that works well.
Physical demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
