Description:

Epic Magazine is a member of Vox Media Studios, and longform narrative journalism is at the core of everything we do. You know that feeling you get when a good true-life tale grabs you right from the start? That is the kind of story we like to tell. Epic is hiring a research assistant. The role entails working directly with Josh Bearman, co-founder of Epic on projects of all kinds, such as: longform non-fiction, narrative podcasts, film and television projects, documentaries, and various other speculative ideas, like zines or newsletters or who knows what else! The title is research assistant, but interest and ability in long-form narrative journalism is a must.

What’s Epic? We are a media company founded by Joshuah Bearman and Joshua Davis, both veteran magazine writers whose work has appeared in Wired, Harper’s, GQ, the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, Radiolab, and This American Life. Dozens of their stories have been optioned for film and TV, including the Wired article that became the film Argo, which — incredibly; still hard to believe! — won Best Picture. Epic was founded to publish original non-fiction stories in magazines and other media, and produce the film and television adaptations. We have a show on Apple called Little America, another show in pre-production, and a film premiering at Sundance, starring John Boyega. As you can tell, we do all kinds of things! There’s a lot going on here, and we need more hands in the fray.

This is where you come in. Are you curious, motivated, organized, and also an avid reader, listener, and cinema enthusiast? Do you love true stories and are full of ideas about ways to tell them? Do you debate Sopranos versus Mad Men with your friends while surrounded by stacks of books? Then this is the job for you. Epic is in Los Angeles and being there would help, but these days, work is mobile, so geography is flexible.

Epic is an open place, so beyond fulfilling the role’s basic duties, you may have opportunities work across the organization on film/tv, podcasting, and documentary projects, but this is first and foremost a job for candidates with journalism experience and an interest in narrative nonfiction.

We are accepting applications immediately, and looking to hire quickly. Please see the provided link for the full job description and application process.
