Sports Data Columnist, San Francisco Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle has an immediate opening for an ambitious, versatile journalist to work in a fast-paced newsroom on the biggest sports stories in Northern California. The sports data columnist will focus on stories based on a blend of reporting, analytic insight and original data analysis across a wide variety of sports, particularly basketball, football and baseball.

The successful candidate will hustle and compete on the biggest stories in Bay Area sports, while engaging readers online through reporting, analysis and graphics. They will have experience with the pace of a major market sports section, writing multiple stories per week.

We’re seeking a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills, is comfortable providing and taking feedback. We want a teammate who aspires to be a key player in a modern news operation that values a smart, local readership and aims to take risks in how we report and present journalism online.

What the sports data columnist will do:

  • Write feature stories on players and teams in the Bay Area across multiple sports, using data to inform readers.
  • Report and write data-driven sports articles for
  • Contribute to our on-site coverage of teams in the Bay Area.
  • Conceive ideas and work with editors and data visualization developers to enhance our storytelling.
  • Contribute to high-impact digital projects produced across newsroom teams.

What it will take to be successful:

  • Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
  • Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
  • Reporting experience covering players, teams and executives in sports.
  • Using data to inform reporting, and knowledge of how data and analytics are used in sports.
  • Ability to report, write and build stories quickly while keeping the strictest commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media engagement and other strategies to broaden readership.

Skills the ideal candidate would have:

  • Demonstrated experience using data to inform reporting and storytelling.
  • Experience with writing opinion and analysis stories informed by data.
  • Data spreadsheet skills, including the ability to use formulas and pivot tables.
  • Understanding of statistics, including probability and regression analysis.
  • Statistical coding skills in a language like R or Python.
  • Web development or data visualization experience.


  • This position is full-time.
  • It will likely include some weekend and holiday work.
