Burlington, Vt.-based Seven Days seeks an experienced, savvy journalist to join our award-winning news team as a political columnist.

The ideal candidate will mine Vermont’s colorful political landscape to pen insightful weekly columns. This is not an armchair-reporting, in-my-opinion job. Instead, we require reported columns. You’ll use public records, data and sources to uncover stories; provide insight into elected leaders at the local, state and federal levels; follow our three major parties (Democrats, Republicans and Progressives); and shed light on the issues that matter most to Vermonters.

You’ll haunt the Statehouse during the legislative session, and cover the jockeying to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy. Ideally, you’d land an interview with Sen. Bernie Sanders, who hasn’t spoken to us since 2015! You’ll cover elections and campaign finance.

The state’s largest circulation newspaper, Seven Days is an improbable success story. Started by two women in 1995, the weekly paper has become one of Vermont’s leading news sources. It’s owned by long-time Seven Days employees with a deep commitment to producing quality, high-impact journalism for a state that we love. We combine creative, sharp design with well-reported, thorough longform journalism. Our stories, such as a recent one detailing excruciating waits for specialty medical care in Vermont, get results. Our news team is top-notch. We’re driven by our curiosity and desire for public service, not a quest for clicks.

We’re looking for someone who has:

•At least three years of experience as a news reporter, producing stories that are        compelling, fresh, original and accurate
•An established track record of enterprise reporting and an interest in politics
•A baseline proficiency in data reporting
•A track record of investigative reporting and a competitive edge
•A strong interest in Vermont

We’ll give extra credit for in-depth knowledge of Vermont politics. But that’s not essential.

We’re working remotely for the most part due to the pandemic, but our columnist will be based in Vermont. You’ll be expected to do field reporting in the Statehouse in Montpelier and around the state as needed. Our office is in Burlington.

Seven Days is an equal opportunity employer. Women and candidates of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
