The Bangor Daily News is seeking a creative, ambitious reporter to cover Maine’s largest city.
This is not a typical city beat job. Your daily routine won’t include incremental city council coverage or rewriting press releases. We’re looking for a skilled and experienced writer who gets why Portland is a special place, and who wants to help audiences across the state and region discover it. The daily priority is uncovering surprising stories, and providing coverage that is direct, compelling and comprehensive. As an aggressive and forward-thinking news outlet, we value source cultivation, scoops, probing enterprise work, and stories told with heart that show the audience something new about the state we all love.
If you’re the right person for this challenge, this is how we would describe you: You're a self-starter who moves fast and, sometimes, breaks stuff. You have excellent critical thinking skills. You understand that local news must adapt to meet serious challenges and you’re excited about working with others to find solutions. You are obsessed with learning how to better serve your audience and can't wait to try new things. You’re excited about covering a range of topics, from Portland's increasingly progressive politics to its diverse restaurant scene.
You’d be joining a large, and growing, statewide news organization in its fourth generation of local ownership. We believe that there’s a bright future for local newsrooms that invest in good journalism and put their audiences first. This role is a key part of that plan.
If you think you might be our next great hire, please submit your resume, cover letter and links to clips that demonstrate your voice as a writer to firstname.lastname@example.org.
